Punters Gamble On Debt Says UK Insolvency Helpline
The UK Insolvency Helpline has expressed concern over the ‘massive increase’ in consumer gambling debt fuelled by the popularity of online gambling websites.
Ian Boden-Smyth, a spokesperson for the independent monetary advisory group, confirmed that a Gambling Support Unit had been created to cater to the significant amount of enquiries related to gambling debts.
Boden-Smyth believes that the UK’s 1,700 gambling websites should carry a “health warning”, and this will be particularly relevant after an easing of gambling advertising regulations on September 1, allowing the majority of EEA and EU gambling firms to advertise their services over several different types of media.
‘Like any addiction, you think that you can get out of it one last time, but that is part of the problem.
‘People can get into as much debt as they have limits on their credit cards and they can even apply for as many cards as they want these days,’ he added.
